Continuing their tradition of success, Michigan Junior Angus members chose “Michigan’s Winning Team” as their theme for 2017. Teamwork, planning and dedication brought them many honors, much success, and fond memories as they participated in the 2017 National Junior Angus Show, “Winning with the Angus Team” held in Des Moines, Iowa.
Ten junior members, their families and eight head of cattle made the journey to participate in the show held July 9 – 15, 2017. Participants included Jaycie Brown from Pinckney, Kavina Johnson from Quincy, Matthew MacMaster from Harrisville, Lindsey Mogg from Sumner, Sterling Reichenbach from Bath, Jack Reid from Eaton Rapids, Maggie Reid from Eaton Rapids, Brady, Paige and Thea Zellmer from Nashville.
Michigan transported “Supercow” and “Cotton Candy” MOO-Ville ice cream from Nashville, MI to Des Moines, IA to participate in the annual NJAS tailgate party. Sampling Florida’s deep fried alligator, Wisconsin cheese curds, and Missouri barbeque beef brisket, topped off with Michigan MOO-Ville ice cream will keep you coming back another year. The tailgate party has rapidly become a highlight of the show, it is an opportunity for fun and friendship for juniors and adults alike. Special thanks to the Michigan Angus Association for their generous contribution to support the tailgate party.
Michigan Angus Juniors competed in many of the contests, and entered a beautiful scrapbook highlighting its members’ personal activities and annual events. It was another successful year for both Michigan Cook-Off teams. The intermediate team in the Other Meat division was composed of Jaycie Brown, Kavina Johnson, Paige Zellmer and Thea Zellmer. They won third place overall in their division with “Motor City CAB Hot Dog” and their skit featured Tigers baseball players being interviewed. The intermediate team in the Steak division was composed of Matt MacMaster, Jack Reid, Maggie Reid, and Brady Zellmer who prepared delicious “Great Lakes Steaks,” and they did a great job with their hilarious skit set in an Emergency Room scene. Many of the juniors also participated in a variety of individual contests such as Photography, Livestock Judging, Extemporaneous Speaking, Quiz Bowl, Skill-a-thon, and the new NJAA Stockman Contest. Paige Zellmer took home second place in Extemporaneous Speaking. Congratulations to all the juniors on their accomplishments.
2017 Miss Michigan Angus Kavina Johnson did an excellent job representing our state and assisting with show ring presentations. We were proud to have Sterling Reichenbach and Lindsey Mogg represent Michigan in the prestigious National Jr. Angus Showmanship Contest. Both did a great job and we were all excited that Sterling was selected as a Top 15 Showmanship Finalist.
Every Michigan junior and adult in attendance was instrumental to the success of the group and contributed to an outstanding state representation. By the end of a busy show week, everyone appreciated the trip, the comradery, dedication, and memories of being a member of “Michigan’s Winning Team.” Thanks to Deb Geuns for making and donating the neat wall hanging for MJAS to contribute in support of the Angus Foundation Silent Auction. Many thanks to all the advisors and parents who made this journey possible!
