Angus Heritage Foundation honors Dr. David Hawkins

The “Angus Advantage” cattle producers enjoy in today’s cattle market was built by the dedication of the generations who came before us. For more than 40 years, the American Angus Association’s Angus Heritage Foundation has recognized the passion, dedication and perseverance of individuals whose life’s work has made a lasting impact on the Angus breed’s success and legacy. The storied list includes respected cattle breeders, influential leaders, and forward-thinking innovators. Each year, the Association inducts new members to the foundation, honoring their impact during the Angus Convention Awards Dinner. Angus breeders, their families and industry partners gathered in Kansas City, Mo. Nov. 1 to celebrate the 2025 inductees: David Hawkins, Mason, Mich.; Mike McGuire, Waverly, Ala.; Tom and Carolyn Perrier, Eureka, Kan.; and Dr. Robert Totusek (posthumously), Oklahoma City, Okla.

David Hawkins, Mason, Michigan, professor emeritus at Michigan State University, has devoted his career to teaching, advising and mentoring animal science students. He taught meat animal evaluation courses and coached collegiate livestock judging teams. As faculty coordinator of the university’s Beef Cattle Teaching Center, he led genetic improvement of its Angus and Hereford herds, producing many national champions, and selling cattle and semen globally. Hawkins judged cattle at major shows in the United States, Australia, Canada and Denmark. As a result of his international travels for shows and seminars, he established a visiting scholar program at the university for Angus students from Australia. Dr. Hawkins was inducted into the prestigious Saddle & Sirloin Portrait Gallery in 2013.

Angus exhibitors led 214 entries at the 2026 Cattlemen’s Congress Super Point Roll of Victory (ROV) Angus Show, January 7-10 in Oklahoma City, Okla. Jirl Buck, Madill, Okla., and Garrett Cloud, Yale, Okla., judged the bulls, females and cow-calf pairs. Chuck Brost, Larkspur, Colo., judged the phenotype and genotype bulls and females. A total of 214 entries were shown.

Brumfield Rita 5012 won reserve grand champion phenotype and genotype female at the 2026 Cattlemen’s Congress Super Point Roll of Victory (ROV) Angus Show, Jan. 7-10 in Oklahoma City, Okla. Brumfield Angus, Sawyer, Mich., owns the February 2025 daughter of K A Kindred. She earlier won champion division 2. Jirl Buck, Madill, Okla., and Garrett Cloud, Yale, Okla., judged the bulls, females and cow-calf pairs. Chuck Brost, Larkspur, Colo., judged the phenotype and genotype bulls and females. American Angus Association Announces the Ten Michigan Breeders Who Registered the Most Angus

The 10 producers who registered the most Angus beef cattle in the state of Michigan recorded a total of 1027 Angus with the American Angus Association® during fiscal year 2025, which ended Sept. 30, according to Mark McCully, Association chief executive officer.

The 10 top recorders in Michigan are: Brumfield Angus, Sawyer; Dow Livestock Acres, Mulliken; Joseph M Novak, Holland; Kevin Beckington, Merritt; Seldom Rest Farms, Niles; Dawson Farms, Hanover; Buckmaster Farms, Mayville; Michigan State Univ, East Lansing; Highbanks Angus Farm, Nashville; Voogt Farms, Marne.

Association members across the nation in 2025 registered 309,926 head of Angus cattle. “Angus breeders lead the way in innovation and genetic progress, giving their commercial cattlemen customers an advantage in the marketplace,” McCully said. “The diversity of the breed means that cattlemen across the country can find the right genetics – no matter their breeding objective.”

ANGUS MEANS BUSINESS. The American Angus Association® is the nation’s largest beef breed organization, serving more than 21,000 members across the United States, Canada and several other countries. It’s home to an extensive breed registry that grows by more than 300,000 animals each year. The Association also provides programs and services to farmers, ranchers and others who rely on Angus to produce quality genetics for the beef industry and quality beef for consumers.
