The MCA/MSU Performance Bull Test is a cooperative effort of Michigan Cattlemen's Assn., Michigan State University and Plank Farm. For information, visit www.micattlemen.org, click on Bull Test. The objectives of the bull test program are to:
-Promote performance-tested beef cattle and serve as an educational tool to acquaint producers with its overall value.
-Provide a common environment for evaluating young bulls for rate of gain, soundness, and body composition.
-Aid beef producers in obtaining superior performance tested bulls that have been evaluated for growth, breeding and
structural soundness, and carcass merit.
Ninety Michigan Angus members, juniors and guests attended the 2011 annual meeting and banquet held March 13 in Jackson. Many thanks to John MacMaster and Jaci Fitzgerald and their family for chairing the banquet committee and to committee members Merle Boehmer, Ricka Boehmer, Janel Horrocks-Boehmer and Barb Sweeney. The Michigan Angus Association, Michigan Angus Auxiliary and the Michigan Jr. Angus Association all held meetings in the morning.
Following a delicious CAB dinner, attendees viewed the "I Am Angus" video and were honored to have Bryce Schumann, CEO of the American Angus Association, address the groups both during their meetings and as part of the banquet program. It was exciting to hear the positive news from the American Angus Association.
Scott Foster, AAA director, also shared information on many good things that are happening in the Angus world and encouraged breeders to call him or Bryce if they had any questions or suggestions.
Kathleen Hawkins, Michigan Cattlemen's Association Executive Vice President, shared information on the "I Love Beef...One Powerful Protein" campaign. The new website www.MIBeef.org has great recipes and nutrition information, as well as food safety and other information.
Dave Hawkins kicked off the award presentations by presenting the 2011 Michigan Angus Association Heritage Award to Lois and Dale Foster from Seldom Rest Farms, near Niles. The Heritage Award is presented to breeders in recognition of their long-time leadership and support of the association and the Angus breed. Other award winners are listed in the Junior and Auxiliary articles in this newsletter.
Several items were offered in the live auction to help raise funds to support youth programming. In addition to items highlighted in other areas of the newsletter, several semen packages were donated by Accelerated Genetics, ABS, Genex, Select Sires, and Seldom Rest Farms/Dameron Angus/Express Ranches/Brumfield Farms.
We greatly appreciate their generousity, along with the support of the following buyers: Lutchka Angus, HighPoint Livestock, Dawson Farms, Bordner Angus Farms, Fitzner Farms, Hillside Acres, Vaassen Angus Farm, DeMeyer Cattle Co., Highbanks Angus Farm, Reidoca Angus, and Hy-View Farm. The sale of select pages of advertising for the 2011-12 Michigan Angus Directory concluded the afternoon program.
